RØDE PodMic features
The RØDE PodMic is a dynamic podcast microphone designed to be mounted to a boom arm or tripod. It’s specifically designed for the RØDECaster Pro 2, one of RØDE’s most comprehensive audio interfaces.
Here are some features of the RØDE PodMic:
- Dynamic microphone (best suited for podcasting)
- Integrated swing arm (internally suspended)
- Suspension-mounted capsule
- Easy-adjustment lugnuts
- Multiple mounting options (not included)
- XLR connection
RØDE PodMic pros
- The RØDE PodMic is one the most affordable entry-level podcast microphones. It’s also readily available for purchase at popular retailers — you don’t have to worry about scouring online resellers for discontinued equipment.
- Thanks to the PodMic’s built-in pop filter, you don’t need to purchase an additional windshield.
- This mic is heralded for its excellent build quality. Thanks to the all-metal construction, it’s more rugged and durable than its competitors.
- There’s a two-year warranty on every purchase, so you don’t have to worry about losing out on your investment.
RØDE PodMic cons
- You don’t get any connector cables with the RØDE PodMic. If you don’t already own a standard 3-pin XLR cable, you’ll have to purchase one separately.
- The RØDE PodMic requires a podcast mixer or audio interface. You need something like the RØDEcaster Pro 2 to record, as well as podcast editing software (like a DAW or Adobe AI).
- Although the RØDE PodMic requires a tripod or stand, you won’t get one with your purchase. Instead, you’ll have to purchase something separately — like the PSA1+, DS1, or Tripod 2.
- You cannot attach the RØDE PodMic to an external shock mount. However, since the microphone’s capsule is suspended internally, and since the swing mount is already decoupled, you shouldn’t need one for optimal sound quality.
- Unlike the PreSonus Revelator, the RØDE PodMic doesn’t offer built-in audio presets. This may not be a drawback if you’re familiar with podcast editing.
- You won’t have a gain knob or headphone jack with the RØDE PodMic. You’ll need to use your podcast mixer for this instead.
Setting up the RØDE PodMic
The RØDE PodMic requires a mixer to record audio, so you must acquire an interface first. Once you’ve purchased your cables and mic stand, you can set up the microphone relatively quickly.
You can set up the RØDE PodMic in six basic steps:
- Attach your PodMic to a desk stand, tripod, or boom arm. You can buy these from RØDE or purchase anything with a 5/8″ male thread.
- Connect the microphone to your audio interface. Again, you must purchase the XLR cable separately (unless you own one).
- Using your mixer, set the gain on your microphone. Don’t forget to plug in your podcast headphones first.
- Attach your podcast accessories. If you want to use a windscreen or cloudlifter with your microphone, you may do so now.
- Open your recording software of choice. If you’re exploring your options, we cover some podcast editing software here.
- Hit record on your DAW.
You are now ready to record, publish, and promote your podcast.

RØDE PodMic performance in podcasting
With a frequency range of 20Hz to 20kHz, the RØDE PodMic was designed for the human voice. It also commands a -57.0dB re 1 Volt/Pascal sensitivity level, which allows it to capture extremely soft sounds.
But despite the microphone’s sensitivity, you don’t need to worry about excessive room tone. The PodMic’s cardioid polar pattern rejects unwanted feedback even if you’re recording with two or more mics in the same room.
You also don’t have to purchase secondary equipment for plosives like ‘P’ or ‘B’ — the PodMic has an internal pop filter and shock mount to soften the blow while recording.
This level of audio quality, plus the affordable price tag, makes the RØDE PodMic an excellent piece of podcasting equipment.
Where to buy the RØDE PodMic
You can buy the PodMic directly from RØDE. However, there are other authorized RØDE dealers you can choose from.
You can buy the RØDE PodMic:
- From Amazon. You can save 2% if you use your Amazon business card, or sign up for monthly installments with a partnership through Affirm.
- From Musician’s Friend. As long as you order before 3 PM, your order will ship the same day you place it.
- From AVL Gear. You won’t get the PodMic’s two-year warranty here, but you can purchase two-year accidental damage protection for $26.
- From Target. You can pick it up in person if you don’t want to wait for shipping, or order online and have it ready in two hours.
Other RØDE podcast microphones
The PodMic is one of many quality microphones from RØDE.
Other popular models include:
- Wireless Pro: Comes with two lavaliers, a receiver, a charging case, two transmitters, magclips, and various cables for $399.99 USD.
- NT1: Comes with XLR cables and an all-in-one shock mount, pop filter, and dust cover for $199.99 USD.
- VideoMicro 2: Comes with a pop filter, wind screen, and HELIX™ Isolation Mount for $79.99 USD.
Alternatives to the RØDE PodMic
Even if it is a popular microphone, the RØDE PodMic may not fit every podcast.
If you’re looking for a model with similar audio quality, try one of the four options below:
PreSonus Revelator
If you’re looking for a podcast mic with voice presets and editing software, the PreSonus Revelator might fit the bill. This dynamic mic has selectable polar patterns to choose the direction for your specific recording setup.
There are a few other benefits to the PreSonus Revelator, such as a dedicated on/off switch and USB connection (so you don’t need a mixer). But you should know it doesn’t come with everything needed to get your podcast off the ground. If you want more than a mic and editing software, you might want to consider a podcast equipment bundle.
You can learn more about the PreSonus Revelator here.
Shure MV7X
Many professional podcasters rely on the Shure MV7X. Not only is it one of the company’s most accessible budget mics, but it’s specifically designed for podcast audio with its Voice Isolation technology.
The Shure MV7X is a lot like the PodMic — it’s dynamic, cardioid pickup, and uses an XLR connection. But unlike the PodMic, each purchase comes with tech support. You never have to struggle with troubleshooting on your own.
If you’re interested in learning more, we wrote a full guide to the Shure MV7X.
Samson Q2U
The Samson Q2U is a no-frills PodMic alternative with mic clips, a desktop stand, a windscreen, and recording cables. The unidirectional polar pattern suits a variety of environments, even if you don’t record in a soundproof studio.
Since the cost is much lower than the RØDE PodMic, the Q2U is popular for podcasters on a budget. You may not get the same level of audio quality, or the PodMic’s internal suspension technology, but you’ll get all the accessories to record right out of the box.
Audio Technica AT2040
Many live-streaming podcasters prefer the Audio Technica AT2040 — It seamlessly connects with platforms like Twitch and YouTube so you can broadcast your show on your favorite podcast hosting platforms.
The AT2040 shares many features with the RØDE PodMic (such as being a dynamic mic, for example). It does, however, offer a unique hypercardioid polar pattern, which is even better suited for sound isolation than the PodMic’s cardioid pattern.
